Hi Siobhan, thanks for your message! Hope I can help…

I’ve never used an agency, I actually did work experience at ASOS.com years ago and did a mix of shoot assisting and copywriting. When my four weeks ended I asked if they would be willing to keep me on a bit longer, they agreed and actually offered to pay me! So I ended up back and forth freelancing in the copy department over the past five or six years. My latest freelance copy job has now come from a girl I worked with there, so, as much of a cliche as it sounds, a lot of it is about who you know.

I would approach companies directly - mywardrobe.com, and net-a-porter/outnet.com are always advertising for copywriters (check out Gorkana for copy jobs, their jobs page is updated every Friday, and the University of the Arts London website often has random freelance jobs or internships on offer). If you don’t have any experience yet, then approach companies asking for work experience first, then if you impress them there’s always the chance you’ll be offered more work. If not, then at least it’s something extra for your CV.
